How It's Made - Premium Seat Frame
Posted by Frank Bray on
How it's made: a premium seat frame. These are built from high-quality plywood (you will also hear it referred to by some as "engineered" wood). I tap oak hardwood dowels into the plywood and screw into these. Learned this technique years ago from a woodworking magazine and it works very well, makes a very solid joint. In addition to this, I add hardwood corner braces, glued and screwed into place for rock-solid construction. No creaking or squeaking of these frames!
What you will find with much of today's furniture is that it is simply stapled together. This is not a good way to make long-lasting pieces, esp. rocking chairs which have more stresses to the frames as you rock. My chairs are designed to last.
The final step is to stretch natural jute webbing over the seat frame and staple in place. This makes a nice base for the foam cushion, it has a little bit of "give" and that, along with the thick foam, batting and fabric, makes for a very comfy seat.
